Sports Medicine //

Sports medicine is a relatively new medical sub-specialty originally created to treat acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries. The practice of sports medicine has since expanded to help manage medical conditions related to physical activity, injury prevention and promotion of healthy, active lifestyles. The ultimate goal of sports medicine is to help individuals maximize performance and minimize disability and time away from sports, work or school.
Whereas a sports medicine trained orthopedic surgeon focuses on operative treatments of musculoskeletal ailments, a sports medicine physician treats primarily non-surgically.
Approximately 90% of all sports and performance conditions are non-surgical and may be treated by a sports medicine physician.
Examples include:
-
Acute injuries: sprains,
strains, fractures and
dislocations
-
Joint pain:
shoulder impingement,
carpal tunnel, tennis elbow
-
Arthritis and knee pain
-
Back pain
-
Concussions
-
Low testosterone
